This year, our UK R&D team have immersed themselves in the public discussion around R&D like never before, providing insights to drive this critical business function forward.

In the first quarter of the year, we launched the 4th version of our Benchmark, securing coverage in Enterprise Talk, London Loves Business, and Consultancy.uk. R&D tax incentive schemes differ from region to region, so it is hard for a business to know where is best for their activity. The Benchmark gives R&D teams a comprehensive tool to compare incentive schemes across 15 countries. This is a project that our international R&D teams are constantly expanding and refreshing. Watch this space for the 2022 edition.

The UK’s R&D landscape is going through some significant and exciting changes, and our team were keen to have their say. Innovation is high on the Government’s agenda, with a steady string of announcements, such as a new national Science and Technology Council, about which Mark Smith spoke to E&T Magazine and The Engineer.

Over the summer Njy Rios hosted a roundtable with R&D leaders as part of the consultation by the department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in the run up to the launch of the Innovation Strategy. A write up with some of the key points was published in Open Access Government, Innovation News Network, and European Business Magazine.

At the same time, the UK is reviewing its R&D tax incentive scheme. Our team put forward a detailed response to the consultation, led by one of our leading R&D experts, Benjamin Craig. Benjamin’s key thoughts were subsequently published The Accountant.

In September, we launched our third International Innovation Barometer (IIB), which tells a story about the changing landscape of R&D, set against the backdrop of a global pandemic. It is widely known that the pandemic has accelerated innovation in many ways, but our IIB finds out what’s really been going on under the surface, with section three – Innovation in a Crisis – focusing on the impact of the pandemic.

Towards the end of the year, the team also took a look at UK innovation. There’s been plenty of changes to the UK’s R&D landscape, impacted by Brexit, the pandemic, and the Government’s initiatives. This led to the publishing of a whitepaper entitled the “State of Innovation”.
