Leading international business performance consultancy Ayming recognised for streamlining the purchasing and supply processes at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust.

Thursday 14 September 2017, LONDON, International performance consultancy Ayming was recognised yesterday by the CIPS Supply Management Awards in the Best Procurement Consultancy Project category for its work with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). Run by the Chartered Institute for Procurement and Supply (CIPS) and recognised as a benchmark for excellence, the awards are the most prestigious recognition of organisations working in procurement and supply chains.

The award judges commended Ayming’s work with GOSH, the UK’s leading children’s hospital. Ayming was appointed to support the hospital’s Procurement and Supply Chain Services Steering Group (PSCSSG) to carry out a complete review of its supply chain and inventory management practices. The project successfully streamlined PSCSSG’s processes from an operational, financial and clinical perspective, while ensuring that the care of GOSH’s annual patients across different clinical specialities remained at the heart of all decision-making and activity.

The project and pilot run by Ayming has successfully created clarity for us over what was a particularly complex area. This will have a positive impact on Trust financials and operations.

As part of the project Ayming ran a pilot for ITUs and orthopaedic theatres to equip the GOSH team with the skills to roll-out the rest of the transformation programme without external support. Results achieved during the pilot include:

  • A set of standard stock portfolios in each area, resulting in potential cash savings of 19% in orthopaedics and 40% in the ITUs, once stock levels are drawn down;
  • The transfer of ordering from 5+ clinical staff to 2 materials management resources, freeing up staff time for clinical activities;
  • The ability to consolidate storage rooms in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit allowing the additional room to be repurposed as a much-needed milk room;
  • A set of standard actions and templates to be used to roll-out the process to the rest of the Trust.

Marianne Padlam, Lead Nurse at GOSH says: “I’m delighted that more of my time has been freed up for patient care, rather than non-clinical administration and purchasing, as a result of the assessment and pilot project.”

Alejandro Alvarez, Director of Operations Performance UK at Ayming, says: “We’re incredibly proud of our achievements working with GOSH. While we’re disappointed to not scoop gold, the shortlisting and recognition from the judges is a fantastic endorsement of our approach, which focused on bringing GOSH as close to best practice as possible to deliver long-term operational and clinical improvement.”

The CIPS shortlisting recognised Ayming for its innovative flexible methodology, which took into account the needs of staff and patients. Knowledge transfer and training proved key to ensuring that the project had a long-term, sustainable legacy and delivered a tangible return on investment.
